A SUITABLE STONE
How geology has
shaped the British
stones used for letter
cutting and fine carving
STEVE GARRETT &
LIDA LOPES CARDOZO KINDERSLEY
An inspiring book - scientifically rigorous, aesthetically irresistible and joyous. Steve the geologist and Lida the stone carver and letter cutter look at a material in common: ancient rock. They explore connections between a geologist's scientific perspective and a stone carver's artistic vision. Engagingly written, beautifully illustrated and skilfully designed, the book reflects the intimate, almost spiritual, relationship that these two disciplines share with rocks and stones. Proceeds from my sales go to MND charities.
The book is available here on my website, on Amazon, and in selected local bookshops including Deeside Books in Ballater, Yeadon's in Banchory, and Heaton Cooper Studio in Grassmere.
Book talks have been well recieved in London, Purbeck and Aberdeenshire.
‘… a lovely little book … sturdily bound, with high quality photographs and charming hand-drawn diagrams … truly cross-disciplinary in their approach’
Ruth Siddall in Geology Today
‘The book is a delightful insight into the common ground between science and art, where we are invited to consider humanity’s impact on the planet and the legacies we leave.’
Lucy Williams in Geoscientist magazine
'It's such a beautiful book - somehow you've made it scientifically rigorous, aesthetically irresistible and also joyous. I'll be sharing it with colleagues here as an exemplar of brilliant science-art collaboration. '
Prof. Marcia Bjornerud, author of Timefulness: How Thinking Like a Geologist Can Help Save the World
This is engagingly written, beautifully illustrated and skilfully designed. The text and pictures combine to show the intimate, almost spiritual, relationship between the stone cutter and their stone, an association enriched by understanding the history of that stone through deep time.
Dr Nigel Woodcock, author of Geological History of Britain and Ireland
‘… it reads easily and with clarity … The beautiful contrast between stones forming in deep time and letter cutting today, the relationship between the stone and the chisel and the stone and stone carver’s place as integral messengers from our time to the next.’
Anna Chorlton, poet and playright of The Silver Ball
‘It’s a fine addition to my collection. I particularly liked Fiona’s drawings. I have used all the suitable stones mentioned, but always decline to work in granite - unsuitable - as the book says.’
Bernard Johnson, Stone Carving and Letter Cutting
